High School Internships & More

Many life sciences companies offer work place learning opportunities and/or internships. We have done a lot of the research for you and have put together a list of Washington State businesses that have formalized internships, volunteer opportunities, job shadowing, and other educational outreach programs. Please click on the link below to access the internship directory, for other programs, please see the tabs on the left.

Can’t find what you need? For further listings, please see:

http://www.wabio.com/career/career-opp.htm

While we have done our best to create an all encompassing list with the most recent and accurate information, you may want to check with the company website or contact to confirm important data such as deadlines, time commitments, and application procedures. We encourage you to direct questions regarding specific programs to the contact listed.

If your company would like to be featured on this site, please contact the Washington Biotechnology & Biomedical Association at admin@washbio.org.

You can also post internships free of charge on:

Good luck!

Minority Focused Internships

Increasing minority representation in life sciences careers is key to bridging the gap in health disparities and in growing a diverse workforce to stimulate new advances and increase productivity. The internships listed on this portion of the site were specifically created and targeted to high school students who:

• Are from underrepresented minority groups (i.e. African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, Filipinos and Pacific Islanders)
• Are economically disadvantaged
• Are the first in their family to attend college
• Come from circumstances that may hinder them from achieving their goals (includes geographic, educational, or financial barriers)

Job Shadow

A job shadow is an opportunity to observe one or more people working at a job that interests you. During a job shadow, you will spend a number of hours in a workplace, ranging from a few hours to a day. You will usually be assigned to a "host" who will either show you around or let you observe him or her at work. Your goal during that time is to learn as much as possible about the job or career by observing, listening, asking well-thought out questions and taking good notes. Job shadows provide opportunities for you to explore future careers and educational interests. We are working to add more job shadow opportunities to this site.

In the meantime, watch a few career video profiles and learn about what the life sciences are:

Volunteer Opportunities

Chances are your high school has a requirement that you complete a given number of hours of community service or volunteer work. Why not learn something while you’re at it? These volunteer opportunities encourage those interested in marine biology, zoology, science, education, or research to apply.

Tours

Class tours and site explorations are a great way to engage your students and get them interested in research and technology. We are currently working to encourage more life science companies to offer tours and reach out to the next generation of scientists.

Camps

These short programs are designed to give you a peek in to the world of science. Whether it be exploring global health, tackling hurdles in modern medicine, or learning about what it takes to be an environmental scientist, these hands on experiences will show you a piece of what the life sciences are all about. Next summer you can take it to the next step and do an internship!

Did you know?

Many proteins, like the digestive enzyme chymotrypsin, are somewhat spherical in shape. Enzymes, which are proteins that facilitate chemical reactions, often contain a groove or pocket to hold the molecule they act upon.
